Founded, according to the tradition, by Hercules, this Roman town was buried in mud following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Besides the baths (Thermae) which are in excellent condition, and the theatre, the excavations have brought to light an entire series of Patrician villas, some remarkably well preserved, with splendid columns, frescoes and mosaics.
